Athens may be packed full of temples and you may stumble across museums and statues in nearly every city block, but once the sun goes down, that is when the fun truly beings! Hey guys, it’s me again, Shelby, and let me tell you, if you want to party without pressure, you can’t do it any better than the Greeks here in Athens! Seriously, if given a chance most Athenians will party every night of the week, and while there are all the standard staples of a large city (clubs, discos, bars and taverns) it is the traditional Greek parties that will turn your world upside down! You know of course that I enjoy a good party, but when it comes to the traditional Greek shindigs, there is one thing that sets them apart; Ouzo. By definition, Ouzo is anise flavored liquor that packs some serious liquor content. By experience enough Ouzo will blow your mind and turn the whole world into a kaleidoscope (and I mean that in the very best way). I’m told that if you grow up with it you become immune to the potency, but I honestly don’t see how that is possible. It would probably take me a number of lifetimes to become immune to this stuff. This means of course that I order it every chance I get! If you want to party in the traditional style you are going to want to head over to Plaka or Monastiraki. Both of these neighborhoods have traditional Greek parties going on almost continuously. If you are more into regular clubbing you’ll be better off heading over to Psirri where you’ll find some of the most popular nightclubs going. From Modern Greek music to Latin dance clubs, and jazz clubs as well as discos, you’ll certainly find something here for everyone! If you’re just looking for a good cocktail you might want to head over to Kolonaki where you’ll find some of the city’s best restaurants and after-work bars. If you’d rather have atmosphere, try the more bohemian Exarchia neighborhood that is popular with college students. Sometimes of course, your best option is just to start walking. This is Athens after all, and chances are that you will stumble across a block party or wedding reception where you’ll get swept up into the celebration as if you were a long-lost relation. Don’t fight it! The people of Athens are very personable and will welcome you with open arms, provided that you don’t refuse their offer of Ouzo. But don’t despair; there are still enough low key restaurants and entertainment options even for those who don’t like to party. But honestly, why would you go out of an evening in Athens and try to avoid the nightlife? You might as well stop breathing. Speaking of which, there is this awesome little club two streets from the hotel where I’m supposed to meet Aetios (my own personal Greek demigod/tour guide) tonight. So bye for now, and oopah! Love, Shelby (S.O.S.) P.S. If you’ve never heard a crowd of drunk and dancing Greeks shout “oopah!” you are in for a treat!
