Granite countertops can enhance the appearance of a kitchen and increase the value of a home. Although granite is more expensive than laminate, this type of stone creates a durable, non-permeable surface for cooking and food preparation. While installing large slabs of granite requires professional tools and expertise, installing granite tiles requires little more than precision and preparation. Instructions as follows: Firstly, measure and order the granite tile for your countertop. Ordering 5 to 10 percent more tiles than you require will allow enough extras to replace damaged ones. Secondly, remove the existing countertop when the cut and polished granite arrives. Take off the backsplash if it is separate from the countertop. Cut through the surrounding caulk with a putty knife. Place a putty knife between the wall and backsplash, carefully prying the backsplash from the wall. Thirdly, disconnect the plumbing under the sink and take out the screws that attach the brackets to the underside of the counter. Use the putty knife to break loose the seal between the rim of the sink and the countertop. Find and remove the screws that attach the length of the countertop to the frames of the cabinet. Lift off the old countertop. Fourthly, cut a piece of 3/4-inch plywood with a circular saw, using the old countertop as a template. Attach the plywood form to the tops of your cabinet frame. Using the same template, cut a piece of 1/4-inch thick cement backer board to fit over the plywood. Measure and cut a thin strip of cement backer board to place in front of the cabinet lip. Screw the cement board down, countersinking the screws slightly below the surface. Cut out the hole for the sink with a jig saw. Fifthly, measure the surface to determine the size of your cut row of tiles. The cut row of tiles goes against the back of the counter, while the whole tiles form the surface near the front. Cut just one tile to begin with to ensure an accurate fit. Polish the edges with a stone polisher, starting with a coarse-grit pad and finishing with a fine-grit pad. Sixthly, apply tile adhesive with a trowel. Place the first whole tile even with the front surface, firmly pressing it into the adhesive. Place two tile spacers on the back edge of the tile and place the second tile down. Continue in this manner until you reach the back edge of the counter, placing the cut tile against the surface that abuts the wall. Apply the second row and the remaining tiles in the same manner. When you get to the sink hole, mark the tiles and cut them accordingly with the tile saw. Seventhly, cut the marble tiles to fit against the outer edge of the countertop. Spread tile adhesive over the front lip of the countertop. Polish the edges with a stone polisher. Put the cut tiles in place along the lip edge. Tape them in place with packaging tape. Let the adhesive dry for at least 24 hours. Eighthly, apply grout between the tiles with a grout float. Press the grout into the seams with the edge of the float. Wipe up grout smears with a damp sponge and let the grout dry for the amount of time recommended on the product label.
