How long has it been since you reviewed your writing skills? Most of us learned grammar rules in the fourth grade. Do you remember the rules about using active or passive voices? Do you know when to use commas or how to use semicolons? Does matter? Or, do you assume your readers will "know what you mean?" Do you run your work through Spell Check or Grammar Check and think it is well done? Both are flawed. Spell check cannot distinguish homonyms -- do you mean there, they're or their? Do you use apostrophes properly? In addition, Grammar Check does not recognize complex sentences and often recommends singular verbs instead of plural. Do you judge people by their grammar and writing ability? I must confess I do. Individuals who cannot write a simple declarative sentence using correct English appear uneducated. I hear that job applications are filled with misspelling and grammar mistakes. If you are not putting forth your very best effort on your application, what quality of work will you produce? E-mail and texting have led to sloppy writing and made quality business correspondence a lost art. Do you allow too many abbreviations in business emails, particularly those going to clients and customers? Apparently, employees do not understand that they represent their employers and their business. Sloppy writings makes your business look sloppy. If you do not have an eye for detail, what quality of work will your company produce? Native speakers, those who speak English as a first language, have no excuses. When was the last time you shouted a correction a television news reporter? "No, you idiot, the gentleman did not 'hanged' himself"! Thirty years ago as a museum curator, I was told to write labels and catalog materials at a tenth grade level. Twenty years ago, we dropped that requirement to eighth grade and now we are writing at a third grade level so our visitors can understand them. How much lower can it go? I have met college graduates who cannot communicate in English. We have professionals who cannot write a simple letter, much less copy for a web site. Everything that comes out of your office reflects on you. What image do you want for company? Business writing of all kinds -- letters, proposals, plans, budget justifications, even e-mail should be grammatically correct and well written. All writing is a reflection of you and your attitude toward excellence. The most brilliant ideas may be passed over if not presented clearly. If you are unsure of your skills, take a class, read a book, or hire a professional editor to check your material before you send it. So, how is your writing? pre written essay
