Each year, innumerable judgments of many varying types, are issued to folks and companies. When all courts and court types are totaled, with civil, small claims, federal, bankruptcy, and criminal and family courts; the total number of judgments awarded each year must be astounding. The common denominator to all judgments, is that someone or something was damaged, harmed, defrauded, ripped off, robbed, a law was violated, or even someone was sufficiently angered. When a judgment names somebody or an entity liable as a debtor for a certain amount of money, it becomes a judgment which might one day result in some payments to the judgment owner. Lots of judgments start from unpaid personal or business loans that creditors made, and the creditors can be folks, banks, companies, etc. These are the top ten most popular reasons folks or entities begin lawsuits to win judgments: 1) Money was lent, or credit was extended, that was not paid back. 2) A contract was breached, often a business contract. 3) Someone got robbed, defrauded, or ripped off. 4) Someone or an item got damaged or destroyed, one example would be an auto accident. I think there are more people driving these days without insurance than ever before. 5) A tax bill, a service, or a some product, that was not paid for. 6) Something was not returned. This is usually something loaned or rented. A rental car not getting returned would be an example. 7) Some law was violated. An example could be somebody sued for spamming or for faxing the wrong individual too often. One more example would be a bank which did not comply with a court subpoena to produce records, or an employer that didn't respond to a court-ordered employee income garnishment. 8) Somebody didn't pay the rent they owed, and/or destroyed somebody else's property. One example of this could be a property eviction. 9) Someone owes for spousal or family support debts. 10) Someone stole property or cash, or took some intellectual property. Some money judgments also originate from a criminal court, often in the form of restitution judgments. No matter which reason a judgment is issued, judgments are not cash, and don't enforce themselves. Certain court clerks have not ever even seen a satisfaction of judgment document.
