New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson Gary Johnson has swept 70% of the votes as a Libertarian nominee for the 2012presidential election to be held in November. While Johnson isthankful to his voters, with Republicans and Democrats at eachother"s throats, he hardly stands any chance to win his bidto the White House. Johnson, once a Republican, after receiving an unenthusiasticresponse in the GOP race, announced in December that he would berunning for the president as a Libertarian. He became thefront-runner in the party after winning 12 straw polls and beatingAir Force veteran R. Lee Wrights. "I am very humbled. This is just the start," Johnson told Reuters after securing the Libertarian nomination. The Libertarian Party, the third largest and fastest growing political party in the UnitedStates, boasts its philosophy of "minimum government, maximumfreedom." Johnson, 59, is an advocate of legalized marijuana, low taxes or what he calls "Fair Tax", immigrationreforms and slashing government spending by 43% to balance thefederal budget for 2013. "I think there"s a mathematical consequence to continueto print money to the tune of 43 cents to dollar that we arespending," he told CNN after winning the nomination on Saturday. "It"s amutual sacrifice by all of us to prevent a catastrophe down theline," he said, stressing that the United States is only adecade away from the fiscal collapse that hit Greece. The governoralso supports same sex marriages and an immediate end to the war inAfghanistan. "I would get out of Afghanistan tomorrow,"Johnson said Saturday. "I want to bring our troopshome." The delegates won by the nominee say that their preference forJohnson is largely based on his experience as the New Mexicogovernor from 1995 to 2003, whereas Wrights had no politicalexperience behind him. Since Texas Rep. Ron Paul Ron Paul is expected to quit the race sooner or later given MittRomney"s presumptive nomination, party officials are countingon Ron Paul"s voters to support Johnson since Paul"scampaign also favored issues the Libertarians boost, according to areport by NBC . Third parties, such as the Libertarians, have never performed wellin the presidential election. The best they ever did was in 1980,when presidential nominee Ed Clark won 1.1 percent of the totalvotes casted for all parties. In the last election, RepublicanCongressman Bob Barr Bob Barr , running on the Libertarian ticket, received 0.4 percent of thevotes.
