When you are on the trails it is common knowledge that you need to ensure you are appropriately equipped for the adventure you are undertaking. However making sure you have the right knife for your trip is often something that people (wrongly) overlook. There are literally thousands of choices out there and buying one of every type of knife would cost a fortune, I intend to look at a sample of key knife types available and to offer a guide for which knife should be used for which purposes, such as cutting rope, cutting through undergrowth or gutting that fish for dinner. The most popular types of knife can be classified as the following; Fixed Blade knife, Folding Knife and Machete. Each has its own uses and picking the right one is key. The Fixed Blade Knife is excellent for cutting through items such as thick rope, meat or wood, as it is typically stronger thanks to the tang being joined to the handle. Folding knives are excellent for transporting as the blade retracts into the handle and it can be stored with ease. Therefore meaning you don’t need to worry about the possibility of cutting yourself or ripping your pack. A machete offers a much more heavyweight option for those needing to cut back undergrowth on their travels. There are a number of different models available such as a Parang style that is perfect for cutting through wood or versions that come with a saw build into the top of the blade for dual purpose use. Bear Grylls Knives are an excellent range of survival knives produced by Gerber and are perfect if you don’t know what brand of knife you want. The range includes the Bear Grylls Machate. A parang machete which is perfect for clearing spaces and neglected trails. It is also adept at cutting through larger sticks for building shelters and prepping wood for the fire. Also available is the Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife. It is a great all round knife suited to tasks such as cutting rope and bandages or for cutting up food items. The fixed blade design means the Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife is rigid and reliable when your jobs need a little more pressure applying to them. As well as the knives themselves, there is also packs such as the Bear Grylls Survival Kits and a selection of practical multi-tools. Picking a the right knife for you truly is a personal experience, and a knife that is perfect for one person could be a nightmare for someone else, only you will know which you is the right one for you.
