Use Sunscreen Many people will apply sunscreen when they're going to the beach or spending considerable time outside, but it's wise to apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 any time you step out of doors. For long periods of outdoor activity, use at least an SPF 30, waterproof, full spectrum sunscreen. Make sure to apply your sunscreen at least half an hour before going out into the sun to give it plenty of time to soak into your skin. Reapply your sunscreen every two hours, especially if you've been in the water. Wear Protective Clothes Clothing with fabric specifically designed to block out UV rays is best, but any loose-fitting clothing with a tightly woven fabric will do when you're spending time outside. If you're at the beach and don't want to cover up entirely, at least wear a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face. Don't forget sunglasses - your eyes need protection from the sun, too. Find a pair with large lenses and UV protection to not only prevent eye strain, but also to keep your eyes healthy and free from cataracts and vision disorders. Seek Out Shade If you're going to be spending a significant amount of time outside, try to remain in the shade to cut down on your sun exposure. This is especially important in the middle of the day, when the sun's rays are strongest. Other Considerations Keep in mind that high altitudes and locals closer to the equator have more intense UV rays than other places. If you live in or are traveling to such destinations, you may want to use a higher SPF sunscreen or reapply more often. Additionally, as with all skin care products, be sure to use a sunscreen that is safe for your skin. If you have sensitive skin, make sure to use a sunscreen free of fragrances, dyes, and other chemicals, and always test a new sunscreen on a small patch of skin before applying it to your whole body.
