The Jakarta Post reported that publicly listed PT Vale Indonesiaset high expectations for the company's newly installed electricfurnaces in Sorowako, South Sulawesi, after undergoing earlyrepairs and consequent upgrades following an incident involvingangry locals last year. Mr Bechara finance director of PT Vale Indonesia said that "We justturned the power on for furnace No 2 in the beginning of April 2012and we are expecting this furnace to be fully in production in May2012. The furnace has 20% higher capacity." According to the company's statement, the repair and upgradesof furnace No 1 and No 2 were due to an unforeseeable incident thataffected both furnaces. The company said it had utilized thesituation to move forward scheduled maintenance work to November2011, a year earlier than previously planned. Consequently, thecompany produced less nickel in matte in the fourth quarter of 2011as compared to the same period in 2010. The incident in question involved a group of people claiming torepresent the interests of Sorowako residents. The group staged aprotest by arresting the company's workers and blocking strategicroads in the small city. They demanded retribution for agriculture lands they claimed wereflooded as a result of the construction of the company's powerplant. The protesters also demanded the company to prioritize therecruitment of locals in its hiring practices. It is not clear howthe incident led to the damage of the furnaces. The company finallyreached a settlement with local residents in February 2012. The shutdown of the furnaces for early repairs and upgrades causedVale to report a drop in production volume last year to 66,900tonnes, an 11% decline from 2010's production of 75,989 tonnes. The company is expecting to produce around 72,000 tonnes of nickelmatte in 2012. Mr Nicolaas Nico Kanter president director of PT Vale Indonesiahinted that the shutdown might still influence the company'sperformance in the first quarter of the year. He added that "We arestill on track for what we have planned, although the result of thefirst quarter remains low. Because we concentrated all theshutdowns in the first quarter, we hope that we will recover andour production will return to predicted levels." Vale, previously known as PT International Nickel Indonesia, is58.73% owned by Vale Canada Limited, 20.09% by Sumitomo MetalMining Co Limited and 21.18% by the public. Source - The Jakarta Post.
