There is no doubt that there are a lot of sore throats right now caused by the flu which is running rampant in the States; however, come February 3, there will be a lot more sore throats and hoarseness which will have nothing to do with any illness. There may even be some who experience loss of voice. Slated for the 3rd of February, the Super Bowl will draw millions of viewers. Many who watch this particular game will experience something known as vocal abuse. The culprit? Pushing your voice from your throat – also known as yelling, screaming or shouting – for 4 hours or more. For some, the discomfort will be gone in a day. For others, however, the damage which will occur from the constant yelling will be more serious. We are a people who are living in louder environments than has ever been experienced in the past. Not only are the sports we watch encouraging us to ‘raise our voice;’ but, we listen to loud music; we frequent loud bars and clubs where we are forced to yell in order to be heard; we watch movies and TV programs at high volume; and, we walk around with earbuds and headphones in which we are constantly being bombarded with a lot of noise. The result is that we are forced to increase the volume of our speaking voice in order to be heard which in turn results in much more stress and strain on the throat and vocal cords. The problem with too much abuse on the throat and vocal folds is that it can permanently affect your speaking voice (and even your singing voice). Unfortunately, that effect is not a positive. You can increase your volume without shouting, however, if you learn how to project your voice. In order for this happen, you will need to use your chest cavity to power your sound. Presently, you are probably using only 4 of your 5 resonators to produce voiced sound. They include the voice box, throat, mouth and nasal cavities. What is missing is the chest cavity. When you compare the size of the chest cavity to those other 4 resonators, you can see that the chest is much larger than even the sum total of the other 4. If constant yelling or shouting has been a problem for you, learn the right method to increase your volume and chronic hoarseness, a persistent sore throat, or even loss of voice will be no more.
