Low level Laser therapy for wounds is becoming one of the most commonly used and advanced care treatments for wound care. It is a medical procedure that uses low level laser light emitted from diode lasers to promote faster and more effective healing of wounds varying from chronic to acute wounds and to help with the healing and amelioration of surgical wounds. As a laser is a strong focused electromagnetic stream that can beam photons into precision areas, the use of this technique is now being more widely accepted as a viable alternative to drugs, and of course, that means less side effects. When a laser is used on a wound it is able to increase blood flow into the wound by penetrating as far as 9mm below the skin.(Sunderland, 2011). The laser light creates adenosintriphosphat (ATP) production that causes wounds to heal. (Horoshovitz, 2007). The benefits to wound healing through laser treatment are productive on many levels. Lasers also cause collagen levels to rise by increasing enzyme production and this helps a wound heal with even more speed and with less scarring. (Horoshovitz, 2007). Low level lasers start the process of healing of wounds deep within the cellular level. The laser treatment itself helps reduce inflammation. By reducing inflammation the enzymes in the body are able to do their job of healing the wound more efficiently. (Horoshovitz, 2007). Cell division and proliferation are also affected by laser treatment on wounds. As enzymes are released by the laser treatment the cells can divide and recreate themselves faster, allowing for faster wound healing. (Health News, 2012). The wavelength of the laser treatment appears to affect the ability of a wound to heal and the correct dosage and amount of time that the wound is exposed to laser treatment will affect the effectiveness of the treatment. Some deeper wounds need longer and higher dosages of the electromagnetic stream in order to heal. (Health News, 2012) Wounds are showing significant response to low level laser treatment. They are able to increase in ATP and blood circulation as well as immune cells being released to the wound through laser treatment. Collagen is also moved to the wound area by the laser and this increases healing while decreasing scarring. Inflammation is decreased by the laser and the wound is able to heal as a combination of these elements comes together to help in overall wound healing. LLLT is being used more often and successfully for this procedure and will be used more for diabetic wounds, injuries and post surgical wounds in the future. There is evidence to suggest that pre operative doses aid the healing of post op wounds. There are a number of devices on the market specifically designed to use on wounds and pain, the best approach appears to be a floodlit process, cover the whole area with the correct wavelength of laser light.
