When your body is concerned, being fit means more than looking toned and physically healthy. Other important elements are your quality of life -- and how long you live. Make exercise and a healthy diet permanent changes in your lifestyle. Different types of exercises are available to keep your workouts fresh and interesting.

If you want to use weights, start out on the smallest machines. Your smaller muscles will get tired before your larger ones, and it also makes a lot of sense to use small dumbbells before using big ones. If you follow this plan, your small muscles can cool off while you work out the larger ones.

Try to make a schedule so that you won't avoid exercising by making silly excuses. Try to set a number of exercise times each week, then do your best to never break the dates. Don't let yourself get away with skipping days. If you're sick or have an emergency that causes you to skip a day of your fitness program, make it up on a day you don't usually work out.

Lactic acid buildup and the resulting muscle soreness can be prevented by a good cool down after your workout, or you can also use a massage. You can also massage your body to help it get back to normal after the gym. Getting a massage is a great way to reward yourself for reaching your goals.

Crunches alone will not give you washboard abs. Exercises that work your abs only strengthen muscles, not burn off belly fat. For six-pack abs, do lots of cardio, resistance training, and changing your diet.

When you are stretching it is vital that you don't bounce your body. Doing so may cause muscle strains. It may seem counterintuitive, but bouncing will not lengthen your muscles. Instead, it could actually cause serious injuries. Stretching should be stable instead.

If you get injured then try and work out the rest of your body. Arms enjoy a symbiotic relationship, and so if one arm is injured, exercising the other can help you maintain a decent level of strength. This is because the muscle fibers are connected.

Find others that will support your efforts. Enlist your buddies to workout with you, or meet new acquaintances at your gym. Exercising with others is fun and can build a sense of competition that fosters increased dedication. They can help motivate you to reach your goals for good.

It is very important to see a doctor for a physical before starting a fitness routine. It will help affirm that you will get the most benefits and have the least amount of risks. If you have existing health issues or if you smoke, you must do this.

Try counting in reverse. For instance, start with the twentieth pushup. Your workouts will speed by (and even feel easier) because you're focusing on smaller and smaller numbers as you progress. Knowing immediately how many reps you have left is a better motivator than counting up.
