Erosion control is necessary to prevent soil loss and water pollution and for this various methods are available. Erosion is basically the loss of top soil due to the runoff stream, water and rain. It’s easy to stop erosion on flat surfaces, whereas on slopes, it’s hard to control and in order to control it effectively on slopes requires examination of the terrain—its stability, drainage and steepness. The main causes of erosion are land clearing and building construction and it becomes the greatest challenge for the professional landscaper or civil engineer to control erosion on steep slope. Methods of erosion control depend on its several cases and sometimes it will not only prevent the soil from washing away but will also enhance the landscape by holding back valuable soil nutrients. Variety of method are available today to control erosion on slopes, having each has its own consideration and it depends on you what method you choose on what your specific problem is? Mainly two methods are use such as structural and vegetation method to control slopes erosion. Planting vegetation is the best method to implement on hill slides, it’s true that selecting plants for this is difficult to capitalize on the depth of the soil and drainage. In this case mixed planting seems better because each plant absorbs water at a different rate and root holds the soil in place. Mats and blankets are also used, which will help soil from washing away. During the germination of seeds, wooden stacks are used to hold these mats and can be laid immediately just after the conclusion of any dirt work that has disturbed the top soil. In a certain levels these wooden stakes will have to be placed along the matting to hold the material in place and once installed, the mats must be kept watered. On the other hand, blankets are used for reinforcing vegetation on slopes and ditch bottoms. These blankets should be smolder resistant and of uniform thickness with material fibers, being evenly distributed over the area of the blanket. Additionally barrier methods are also used for the same, in which the man- made and natural terraces, contour barrier and ploughing are included. Dikes and channels are also acts as a barrier and as effective erosion control method. Some dikes are not only stop the flow of water and store it but also redirect through the channel. These channels are made up of concrete and other non- porous material that reduces the possibility of runoff and suits best to control heavy water runoff. To remove the water at regulated rate, it may also be incorporated with drainage ponds and overflow drains. These controls methods are typically used in commercial and heavy residential areas and one of the most expensive techniques to control erosion.
