Many people want to improve themselves. They get an education to learn more; they take courses to improve themselves. What most people do not realize is that they have a better voice inside of them. I call it your real or true voice. Unfortunately, we, as a people, are lazy breathers. All mammals breathe with the support of the diaphragm. You and I were born breathing with the support of that muscle. As we develop, however, we resort to shallow or lazy breathing which has an effect on the production and sound of the speaking voice. It means that instead of powering the voice with all 5 resonators – chest, throat, voice box, mouth and nasal cavities, we use only 4 of those resonators. Because of this shallow or upper chest breathing, we are unable to make use of the chest cavity. What results are voices that may be nasal, too high-pitched, weak, strident, harsh, throaty, hoarse, whispery, etc. The list goes on and on. It also means that many people are more susceptible to vocal abuse. Those who coach, train, minister, teach, campaign, act, root for their favorite sports team, or even just talk for great lengths of time on the phone, for example, are likely to experience a raw throat, chronic hoarseness, or even loss of voice by the end of the day. And, as you age, the voice becomes even more problematic in this respect. When you learn to power your sound from your chest cavity, however, you immediately stop the vocal abuse. And in this process of changing your voice placement, you will discover a richer, warmer, deeper sound, as well as the ability to increase your volume without shouting. In addition, because you will be breathing with the support of your diaphragm, you will find one of the best means of controlling your nervousness in any form of public speaking. If you are like most people, you do probably do not like hearing yourself on recording equipment. More good news is that you will actually enjoy hearing your ‘real’ voice because it will sound resonant and more mature – not too old, not too young. All voices that have had training sound ageless and, in truth, will improve with age, much like a bottle of good red wine. Imagine a voice which resonates with warmth, improves with age, and puts an end to vocal abuse. Now imagine what it will mean to your level of confidence.
