Though most people travel to Tuscany to visit Florence, Pisa or Lucca, the countryside holds some beautiful and well-planned gardens open to the public. These gardens vary from the linear plans of the Italian Renaissance style, to more natural permaculture type landscapes. If you're lucky, your Chianti villa rental might be near some of the historic "pazano" or one of the region's many formal gardens open to tourists. Take advantage of your Chianti villa rental location by visiting nearby gardens and botanical parks - there is much more to see in this lovely region besides the High Italian Renaissance paintings of the cities' art galleries and museums. Spending time outdoors to appreciate the gardens will give you exposure to a different kind of art – the natural, living kind. Garden of the Villa di Geggiano Even if your Chianti villa rental is right in the middle of a city, you can still take a quick trip to escape to the tranquil countryside. For example, this garden – the Garden of the Villa di Geggiano – is only 5 km outside the city of Siena, on top of a hill surrounded by vineyards, offering spectacular views of the rolling landscape. The villa was renovated in the last decades of the 18th century – along with the gardens that surround it on all sides. It is a unique and unusual complex, making it of interest to those keen on learning about the region's landscape architecture and also its history. Villa Medici This house is one of the region's oldest residences; it has retained its original Renaissance style garden, remaining one of the best-preserved examples of this period in landscape gardening. However, it is also one of the most obscure, in that not many people know about it. If your Chianti villa rental is nearby, you might be in for a treat: an afternoon in an absolutely spectacular garden surrounding an ancient 15th century villa of the Medici family, without the swarms of tourists. The location of the villa in relation to the position of the garden has allowed for the landscape to run over three terraces that descend down a gently sloping hill. Cypress trees, holm oak, and lemon trees are strategically planted to create a pleasing atmosphere, with the farthest terrace hosting a large fountain under the shade of massive magnolia trees. There are many, many more gardens in this delightful region of Italy; spending a morning, an afternoon, or all day with a picnic in one of these beautiful places will be time well spent for anyone who enjoys the perfect combination of nature and art.
