In Australia, the use of heat pumps as a water heater for the purpose of home heating is a common implementation. Heat pumps do not require direct sunlight to heat water. Instead they use the energy in the surrounding atmosphere to generate heated water as well as warm or cool air in the home. The beauty of these pumps is that they use the same refrigeration cycle for heating and cooling. Australia's temperate climate makes the use of heat pumps as a water heater and as an alternative to a traditional furnace possible. In fact, they are used to provide home heating and cooling. This means homeowners can rely on the heat pump as a home air conditioning unit, furnace and water heater. Classed as a Solar Heating System Heat pumps are classified as a solar heating system because of the way they work. The latent energy held within surrounding ambient air is converted into heat much the same way as an air conditioner or refrigerator uses air to cool. How They Work The energy conversion occurs when a heat pump pulls in the air and an evaporator absorbs the heat and then a condenser emits this heat to the outside. The process is as follows: A fan pulls in air into the heat pump where cold refrigerant in an evaporator absorbs the latent heat energy. The refrigerant then flows to a compressor where it is converted into a gas. The heat from the gas is then used to heat water using a heat exchange process. Then the refrigerant cools and is drawn back into the evaporator. Water stored in a tank flows past a heat exchanger where the heat from the refrigerant gas is passed to the water. Now you have a heat pump with a water heater tank full of warm water which is used to heat the external space, floor board heaters, swimming pool water, and to provide hot water for washing or other utility purposes. The heat pump consists of an outdoor unit consisting of a compressor, coil, reversing valve and fan. The indoor unit is where the air handler, coil and indoor fan are stored. Some systems have an optional air cleaner and there is a thermostat which controls the temperature settings. As the price of fossil fuel increases, Australians with heat pumps used as a water heater and home heating and cooling system are in a better position for controlling the increase in costs of keeping their homes comfortable.
