Figurines were made of stone or clay

Business
A figurine or small figure is a statuette that represents a human being, deity or animal. Earlier figurines were made of stone or clay. Nowadays they are made of ceramic, metal, glass, wood and plastic. Figures with movable parts, are called dolls or mannequins, and robots or automata, if they can move on their own. Figurines and miniatures are sometimes used in board games such as chess. The two oldest known figurines, made of stone were found in Africa and Asia, and they are several hundred thousand years old. Many figurines dating back to 25-30,000 BC, made of fired clay have been found in Europe. These are the oldest known ceramic figurines.

Terracotta Figurines showing facial detail have been recovered in Minoan Crete, from the Iron Age strata. These early figurines are one of the first signs of human culture. One cannot tell for sure how they were used. In all probability they had religious or ceremonial significance. They could have been used in many types of rituals. Many have been found in burial sites. Some could have been used simply as jewellery or made or children to play with.

Common materials for figurines are porcelain and other ceramics. Porcelain and ceramic figurines originated in China. The first European porcelain figurines t were produced in Meissen in Germany, and was called Meissen ware. Soon this art was copied in many other cities also. Dresden china originates from Dresden. Since the 17th century, figurines of gallant scenes, beggars or figurines of saints have been carved from pinewood in Val Gardena, South Tyrol in Italy. Modern figurines can include Precious Moments as well as Hummel figurines, Bobble heads and other kinds of memorabilia. English Royal Doulton and Valencian Lladro are two companies which produce porcelain figurines. An all time favorite with people of all ages is The Royal Doulton. The figurines are made to order and are made with great care and an eye for detail. Each figurine is one of a kind-unique and priceless! The moulds are destroyed after making each figurine to ensure the uniqueness of the figurine. First created in the 1880’s by Charles Noke, a number of these masterpieces have since been collected all over the world. The range includes – The Factory Sample Figures, Petite Figurines, Royal Doulton Dickens and the Story book figurines.
