Laying a carpet can be relatively straightforward. The only skill required is the ability to cut the carpet to size and the ability to fit carpet strips correctly. During the course of this article, we are concerned with the latter skill. Below, we describe some of the things that you need to know about using carpet strips. Many of us love to get our hands dirty and undertake our own DIY projects. Some people loathe it, but for many it is very therapeutic. However, it can turn into a rather depressing episode when something goes wrong. For instance, if you want to lay your own carpet but you cut it too short then you will be disappointed. It is important, therefore that you follow these rules: 1. Check your measurements 2. Arm yourself with knowledge about how to do the job 3. Check your measurements again 4. Check your measurements one last time Being able to carry out tasks like carpet fitting is invaluable and can save you a lot of money, money that you can spend on even nicer carpets. Get it right, though, or you will be disappointed. Now, let's consider the basics of laying a carpet: 1. Remove the old carpet – some people may use an old carpet as underlay, but we do not recommend this as the carpet is not intended for use as undelay and you can run into problems, such as damp. 2. Clean the floors – make sure that you remove any nails or tacks used to lay the original carpet; remove all glue, all of the old carpet strips and anything that is lying in the way. 3. Next, lay down your new underlay (we hope that you do have underlay, it will help to protect your carpet and it has many other benefits, too; such as insulation and soundproofing) and carpet. Cut it as close to the edge of the parameter as you can manage. 4. Once the underlay and carpet is in place use a staple gun to secure it to the sub floor. Do not go too mad with the stables, you need to be aiming to lay a staple every 8 to 10 cm. 5. Now the tricky bit: take your carpet strip and lay it against the edge of the wall. You must ensure that it is as close to the edge of the wall as you can possibly get it. 6. Make sure that the pointed section across the lip of the carpet strip is facing the ceiling. 7. Make sure that you have the strip as flat as possible – if it does appear higher in places check for items that may be obstructing the carpet strip. This may mean that you need to lift up the carpet and underlay. 8. If you do not have strips that reach along the entire parameter then you will need to use several strips, and if need be, cut them down to size. 9. Then, go around the room and push each of the pointed tacks down firmly into the carpet – use a small hammer if necessary. There are different types of carpet strips, so this information may not necessarily relate to those purchased. If you have trouble understanding these instruction then follow manufacture guidance, alternatively, consult the company with whom you purchased the strips. Follow us :
