Due to the fact that it is located in the centre of the Athabasca Oil sands, one of Canada's richest and most profitable natural resources, thousands of people come to Fort McMurray every year looking for work. The amount of oil deposited in the oil sands puts Canada second only to Saudi Arabia when it comes to oil reserves. There's enough bitumen (a raw form of crude oil) within the sands to keep the booming business going for at least the next two hundred years. It's not surprising, then, that the latest census in 2012 put the current workforce at around 34,000 people, nor is it surprising that this figure has risen consistently since 2000. Of course, with such a rapidly increasing influx of workers, the 'urban service area' of Fort McMurray itself faces one major problem: Where to house the workers? Many of mobile workers reside on camp lodges close to the work sites themselves. The advantage of the camps is that they are very low cost, often subsidized by the oil companies themselves. They are also very handy if the worker is on a short contract, or if they do not know how long they may be needed for. The disadvantage, however, is that they are away from the hustle and bustle of the vibrant community of the ubran service area, so workers rarely get to take advantage of all that the city has to offer. A recent study showed that the majority of mobile workers who resided in camp lodgings rarely ventured into Fort McMurray more than once a month. Within Fort McMurray itself, there are many options for workers depending on their income and whether they are in town on long or short term contracts. There are many hotels in Fort McMurray, however these can often work out to be quite expensive, especially if a worker is contracted for more than a few months. The most affordable and comfortable solution is often one of the many Fort McMurray apartments on offer at various prices. Due to the recent boom, many of these suites are modern, being only recently erected, and are fully equipped to make life as comfortable as possible. As well as comfortable lodgings, residents can often take advantage of a number of amenities. Many apartment blocks have access to communal pools, skating rinks, fitness centres, basketball courts and even 18 hole golf courses. Flexible solutions are available in the form of furnished apartments, one or two bedroom suites that are ideal for workers who are on short term business, be it 7 days or a month, and are often very reasonably priced when compared with local hotels. Again, many services and amenities are on offer such as fitness equipment, tennis courts and even access to McDonald Island Park, with its aquatic centre and hockey arenas. With many options on offer, and more apartments and suites under construction, Fort McMurray will be able to continue to prosper for many years to come, as long as its work force are able to earn a living and live comfortably.
