Modern Designer Furniture Concepts

When you think of modern designer furniture, the word “contemporary” comes to mind. However, there is a distinct difference between these two concepts. Contemporary indicates that the furniture has been made today while “modern” indicates a style. Modern furniture tends to be more dominating and is not as accommodating as “contemporary” is. The modern concept was introduced in the early part of the 20th century and has been a welcome relief to styles that existed earlier. Traditional furniture was dark, heavy, had a lot of carved wood and patterned fabric was used.

Modern styling on the other hand, focuses on simple shapes, moulded plywood and makes extensive use of glass and metals. It was the introduction of new materials that was cataclysmic in the innovation of modern furniture. The appearance of materials such as plastic resin, moulded plywood, wire and mesh, all led to the creation of bold new designs and furniture concepts. Subsequently, modern lighting was also designed to gel with the furniture. The general look of the furniture became more sleek and uncluttered. Technology was used in tandem with art to create a look that was unique and eye-catching.

Traditional furniture was care-intensive and fussy and as people grew busier they began veering towards uncomplicated and almost stark-looking modern furniture. The underlying concept of modern designer furniture is that less is more. The tables and seating arrangement is symmetrical and sleek. The coffee table will be artistic and the side-tables, tame. There would probably be a cushion or two with modern lighting such as a tall curved standing lamp adorning a corner of the living room. The lamps may be large but will still sport a sleek look and may have gravity-defying forms. Leather is used very often in modern designs.

However, if you prefer textures, pick fabric that has a geometric print. Cocktail tables will be very futuristic looking and at times look like they have come right out a spaceship. The artwork and rugs are simple zig-zag lines or pop art and will have bold colors. Chrome or metal legs are generally added as their highly reflective surface adds to the modern look. The art generally has no still-life in it and will be either sculptural or abstract. Storage cabinets are strictly ok if they emphasize rectangular shapes and have clean and bold lines.

Lounge chairs could be leather that has been wrapped around chrome frames and more often than not, look like buckets of various shapes and sizes. Remember that modern furniture is ideally used in a child-free zone as it is more artistic and smaller units such as tables may be more free-standing and thus prone to toppling over. This can be an issue if there are children around the house. Another important pint to keep in mind is that if this is a good option if you are planning to redecorate your entire house at one time. Having a living room that sports a modern look with the rest of the house designed in a more traditional manner make the interiors look very disconnected.
