Well I'm home to-day,no work on until to-morrow and this house is quiet as a mouse. The cats are all asleep,Oscar my little terrier is on the front couch also asleep and I just happened to catch the photo of my black labrador "Sheeba" on the wall.We had to put her down after 15 years. Its funny how a photo can bring back a flood of memories.I suppose it's because it's so quiet here that I reflect back just by looking at a picture on the wall. She was my best mate and all the family had a lot of time for her when she was more agile. She had really bad arthritis in both her back legs, and I'm pretty sure she had cancer. But she got the best care anyone could have given a dog.For instance, carrying her down the back steps so she could do her business was a big chore, but I allway's managed to do it,if I got her in time. She wasn't a light weight either, she weighed over 35 kilograms. I would carry her down the back steps and then wait 20 minutes or so for her to have a sniff around, then most times she would just sit on the grass and look around. She loved it out side, but couldnt leave her by her self just in case she tried to come back up the steps on her own.It was about a month just before we put her to sleep that we both fell down the back stairs.I was trying to carry her back up when I lost my balance, and we both went backwards.I was more concerned about her than me,but, luckily we both survived except for a bit of skin off my elbow as I hit the pavers.Lucky for me my wife heard what happened and rescued us both, needless to say there was no more stairs after that. From then on it was out the front door on the grass for Sheeba. We couldn't even take her for walks any more, she just couldn't do it.And in Summer when it got over 30c we had to wet her down and keep her cool. The vet who put her to sleep last october was really good.No rushing, and we did it here at home because it was hard to get poor old sheebs to the vet.She passed away very peacefully, with us all with her, and then the tears came.I kept putting it off all the time because I didnt want to lose her,but in the end I know now it was the right thing to do,and after all she's only sleeping.Still love dog's but have no plans of replacing Sheeba just yet,the hardest is at the end.So that photo I mentioned in the beginning,is one of three hanging on our wall to remind us all of an old friend we all dearly miss. Thanks for reading about Sheeba. Please visit my blog for more articles, verse and other sites of interest http://lion1ell2.jimdo.com
