Where is there an underground town? South Australia is very rich in minerals of different kinds. One of the most beautiful of these is the opal. These small stones are very popular in jewellery. A particularly rich deposit of opals, still mined today, was found in 1911 west of Lake Cadibarrawirracanna. Although the gems lie close to the surface and are easy to mine, the heat makes mining difficult. When the blazing sun beats down, the temperature often reaches over 50 degrees centigrade (over 120 degrees Fahrenheit). To survive the terrible heat, the miners have built their homes underground. Comfortable houses have been hollowed out of the white and red rock. There is even a church gouged out of the ground. The name of this mining town is Coober Pedy, which in the local Aborigine language means "white man's hole in the ground". For Details
