Jeremy Langmead, the editor of Esquire Magazine, once wrote: “Whether it cost £50 or £5,000, men clock the watch in the same way some women might take note of another's shoes. It's what we do. And the watch industry is very happy about that.” But perhaps there is another side to the story of timepiece collecting than simply the mere obsession of it. Watch collecting does seem to be an unusual hobby, yet what makes it so special? A watch is nothing but a tiny gadget that fits into the palm of your hand, and yet it holds the very essence of life—time. For years many, great men and women have taken a hobby mindset, of sorts, towards the concept of collecting watches, some antique pieces, some astounding original creations, and others branded designs like Aqua Master Watches, for example. In the early days there was no such thing as 'collecting'. A timepiece was simply handed down from generation to generation. On a young man's 21st birthday, his father would usually present him with a watch, sometimes gold, sometimes silver, and other times maybe even brass. But the symbolism for this was the fact that the young man was now responsible for his time and in essences, responsible for his life. Most the simple collectible watches were made from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Most of the creations that are made nowadays are not single designs, meaning you can find many more in the same pattern and design. Designer timepieces are also easier to come by now as other brands and watch companies are finding ways of mass producing and creating at a cheaper cost. However the art of valuing the time, in every sense of the word, will never seem to grow old for those who have a keen eye and a ready mind in choosing the best of the best. As the old saying goes: You can tell alot about a man by what is on his wrist.
