The archipelago of Maldives is famous for its beaches- ribbons of white sand found next to warm, turquoise waters and fringed by sweet scented palm trees. The island is also blessed with terrific beach weather almost throughout the year. So it is somewhat ironic that the capital, Malé, which is home to many important historical and cultural attractions, does not have great beaches. To rectify this problem an artificial beach was built at an estimated cost of USD 10 million. The beach looks quite natural and those who do not already know that it was made artificially may have a hard time believing that fact. While the artificial beach is not as good as the many natural ones found scattered across the island, it should not be missed when sightseeing in the capital. The Malé beach is almost always filled with people. It is the best spot on the island to get some fresh air, go for a jog, go swimming and people watching. Always full of activity, the beach is a lively place where something is always happening- water sports, musical shows and even carnivals are often held here. Many national festivities are also conducted here. The best time to visit this beach is during the evening, when the sun is about to set. One can spend the day visiting a few of the local attractions before heading over to the beach. Attractions in Malé that should not be missed include the Grand Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiiy), the Independence Square and the Sultan Park and National Park. Although the Malé beach is a great place to visit and hang out with friends those who want to enjoy the very best beaches should drop by some of the other islands. As a holiday destination that receives numerous visitors each year, Maldives has excellent infrastructure. Shops, restaurants and resorts are all quite abundant, although they vary in quality. Tourists looking for good resorts in Maldives will have plenty of choices, with the Maafushivaru Maldives being one of the best options available. It is ranked amongst the best Maldives island resorts and is a terrific place to stay. Thanuja Silva is a travel writer who writes under the pen name Auburn Silver.
