How Long Will My Hardwood Floor Last? Horyu-ji (Temple of the Flourishing Law), a Buddhist temple in Ikaruga, Japan, is one of the oldest wooden buildings in the world. Its original construction is believed to have been completed in 607 AD, using wood which was felled in about 594 AD. It seems to have been greatly damaged by fire in 670, and was completely rebuilt by 711. Other major repairs were performed in 1374, and again in 1603. This is not necessarily a pattern of carelessness, since wood floors do require periodic maintenance, and some attention every few centuries is not excessive. Dates of construction and repair are necessarily estimates, but it is safe to say that Horyu-ji's floors are in the neighborhood of 1,400 years old.
