In 1926, sunglasses staged their own revolution, reinventing themselves permanently from medical necessities to fashion says-who shades. Dior sunglasses went cool, vamped-up on chic. Women fashioned themselves as mysterious, silhouetted behind ultra-feminine, basic black lenses. Men went vintage motorcycle, restyled themselves Bad Boy in Old World Italian. Unisex took on the look of high-shine metal, out-of-bounds, pushing the envelope. Dior prescription sunglasses became all three. More Than Meets The Eye However, there is a lot more to sunglasses than meets the eye. First of all, sunglasses perform the very real function of shading the eye from harmful UV radiation. Most of us are well-aware of the dangers posed to the skin from too much sun. That's why almost everyone wears sunscreen. But, what screens the eyes? Sunglasses. And not just any sunglasses. Cheap Sunglasses. We've all bought them. But, do they really screen out harmful UV rays? There are lots of sunglasses out there. Most have special coatings. Some screen out glare, some automatically tint themselves, some improve color vision. But, many of these gimmicks do not really protect against UV damage. If improperly screened, this radiation can be absorbed into the retina of the eye and, over time, cause severe damage, even blindness. UV Coating Dior sunglasses will have a UV coating. This coating allows natural light waves to enter the lenses, but specifically prevents UV-A and UV-B from entering the eyes. Proper Fit Perhaps you don't read those blurbs about 'the right style for face shapes'. You're willing to take the dare, give it a go, if you love those frames. Go ahead, because that's not what fit is all about. Fit involves four basic themes: Frames: Frames that fit well should be slightly wider than your face. the temples should not touch your face, but not be so wide as to leave a gap between temples and face. Bridge, Or Nose Piece: This little piece joins the lenses and fits across the nose. The key word here is 'fits'. It the nose piece fits poorly, it is uncomfortable and sets the entire project awry. So, make very sure that the sunglasses bridge is not too narrow or too wide for your nose. Temples, Or Arms: The arms of the sunglasses must reach behind the ears and fit snugly, but not too tightly. If the arms are too short or too long, no matter how cool the shades, they will force the glasses up behind the ears and down on your nose. Pupil Position: Your pupils are the true windows of the eyes. An optician can measure the distance between your pupils, so that your dior prescription sunglasses will fit just right for you. Properly fitted sunglasses will stay in place on your face, and your pupils will be close to the center of the lenses so that visual correction is optimal. The Right Combination You want the right combination of cool, custom fit and UV protection when you shop for sunglasses.
