The Fijian government said Tuesday that it would continue dialoguewith Qantas, the flag carrier of Australia, on the sale of theirshares in Fiji's national airline Air Pacific which will berebranded as Fiji Airways. Despite the rebranding, no major decision can be made unless theairline gets back the 46.3 percent of shares from Qantas which isbeing sold at a high amount of more than 74 million Fiji dollars(about 42.3 million US dollars) at this stage. Fiji's Attorney General and Minister for Civil Aviation AiyazSayed-Khaiyum on Tuesday told the media that the national airlineis still controlled by Qantas as the amount they were wanting wasridiculous. "Normally in a boardroom, you have a vote and you havenormal majority works. But in this situation, you may have majorityof the votes in terms of the new routes, destination to bedeveloped by the airline but if a director of Qantas objects to itthen you cannot do so,"he said. Sayed-Khaiyum further explained that while the correspondence showslittle progress over the last three years, both parties were keento seal a deal. "The problem is still there in the sense that youhave a shareholder that owns 46.3 percent of the company and hasveto powers in 15 areas and at the same time we do not haveeffective control over our national carrier. And then you havevarious conventions that numerous countries in fact adhere to interms of control over their national carrier." Qantas wants independent arbitrators from London if negotiationsfail but the Fijian government said the High Court can appoint anarbitrator if required. Everything in the agreement needed to be adhered to, said Sayed-Khaiyum. Air Pacific Chief Executive Dave Pflieger announced Monday that thenational airline had decided to change name as Fiji Airways in ahope to attract more tourists to the island nation. The rebranding is part of their initiative of restructuring andsignificant investments will be attracted, Pflieger said, addingthe airline's new fleet of air buses will come equipped with newbrand and the public can expect to see the new logos and aircraftby October next year.
