Guidance for becoming a CPR Instructor

Health,Public Speaking,Small Business
Guidance for becoming a CPR Instructor So you’re ready to become a CPR AED and Medic First Aid (MFA) instructor. You have chosen wisely in the decision to help others learn a lifesaving skill they can use at work or especially at home. This skill should be learned at a young age as it’s never too early to become a hero. However, those higher up in years should obtain some training as well as often they are afflicted with medical conditions that may require close attention to. In short, this in my opinion should be general knowledge. But now that you have made the decision to move forward with this idea. I’m sure a whole slew of questions have now come to you on how to get this in motion. Below I will list a few steps that I had to learn on my own when I began. 1. Find the appropriate organization to affiliate yourself with. American Heart Association, Medic First Aid International and American Red Cross are all great. The one you want to pick will depend on the type of cliental you would like to offer your services to some are accepted by General Industry or often the medical community requires one or the other. This is a decision you will have to research on your own. 2. Take an Instructor Development Course or Train-the-Trainer class in order to be able to apply for an Instructor Certificate. This will also allow you to apply for a Training Center ID if you are currently not affiliated with an organization. 3. LLC or DBA? Talk to your CPA about this. They will know what questions to ask you about your business, how you will be running it and can advise you on the best or simplest way to establish it at this point. 4. Make your business name legal. Once you have a company name, usually this is the same name you picked to be your Training Center ID. You must go to your town’s court house and pay a $25 fee to establish your business. They will check your state to make sure the name is not already taken and once approved, you’re legal. 5. Apply for a Tax ID number. This is done by going to IRS.org and applying online. You will get your number before you close your browser. It’s that quick! 6. Set up a Business Account with your bank. Some may opt to not do this but I would highly recommend you do. Not only will it make it easier for you’re to keep your business and personal taxes in order. But it will also give your company more professionalism when they are asking you who they write the check out to. Companies often feel more impulse to continue doing business with you if you’re an established business. They feel better writing the checks out to a company then just to your name. 7. Insurance, this is most important. Make sure to obtain an E&O (errors and omissions) policy before you teach your first class. Often this can be bought through the Organization you will be working with to buy your training supplies, certification cards and affiliate yourself with. At least I know that’s the case with Medic First Aid International. That’s it! You should be ready to teach your first class! It’s a rewarding job to know what you will impart to your students will stay in their minds throughout their lives. One day, because of the time you took to show someone these essential skills, a life may be saved. Feel proud of this new endeavor you are embarking on and let your passion for teaching come through with every class you instruct.
