Ocho Rios is one of the top tourist destinations in Jamaica. It is located in the north cost of the country, in the parish of Saint Ann. The name ‘Ocho Rios’ means eight rivers in Spanish however funnily there are not eight rivers here. According to legends, Christopher Columbus’s first step on the Caribbean islands was in Ocho Rios. While planning your tour of Jamaica, be sure to include some days in the Villas in Ocho Rios.
Ocho Rios has the distinction of being the biggest port of call luxury cruise ships. A large number of cargo ships also port here to load goods. This has made the town an important center of economic activities. The tourism remains the town’s main attraction. Its first claim to fame was being the location of the iconic James bond film, Dr. No released in 1962. The locals refer to the town as Ochi.
In the last two decades, the small fishing village has rapidly turned into a world famous popular tourist destination. At present, the town of Ocho Rios is the second most visited place in Jamaica. Despite the name of eight rivers, it is the picturesque waterfalls of the town that will capture your attention in addition to the rich flora and fauna. By staying in the Villas in Ocho Rios, you will also be able to visit the very famous Dunn's River Falls, which is a rage among tourists. The Dunn's River Falls is counted among the most photographed places of Jamaica.
You will have a great time swimming in the cool waters of Dunn's River Falls. There is so much natural beauty around that you will find it hard to decide which way to look. The days will simply fly away as you bask in the sights and sounds. Even if you do not get in the water, you can still treat yourself to fabulous views around the town.
Another famed spot is the Fern Gulley, located near Ocho Rios. The rocky gorge with a great depth is awe inspiring. It is only four miles away from Ocho Rios. The Gulley makes its way from the plain lands to the mountainous areas of Jamaica. To add to the charm of the place, more than 500 species of tropical fern and foliage grows here which you will only find in the tropical rainforests.
After travelling through out the day, you can relax and enjoy the evening in the town’s popular joint. There are quite a few good restaurants in the town. You can also go to night clubs. These are located in the Margaretville area of the Villas in Ocho Rios. Another unique attraction is the Dolphin Cove, where you can interact with dolphins while swimming.
