When the temperature goes up, so does crime. When it's hot, we get irritated, and irritation can easily lead to a confrontation. But, why do we get irritable when the heat rises?
Scientists say when Mother Nature turns up the thermostat, our brains release more adrenaline—the stuff that makes us want to ride roller coasters. The adrenaline primes us for fight or flight, which can lead to more aggressive behavior. That's why we tend to get the fight fidgets in the summertime.
Away from Home
Warm weather means more folks are outside for longer periods of time. We tend to travel around in our cars more too, whether we’re driving to the beach, the water park or a shopping mall across town.
Thieves love summer time because of all the unlocked cars. Think about it. Have you ever left your car unlocked at the beach? You probably have. You were only going to take the kids to the bathroom quickly, or you forgot to relock it when you went back to grab your camera so it wouldn't fry in the car.
Ask anyone who lives in a resort or beach town. Crime goes up when it gets warm and the tourists show up. All it takes is a couple of seconds for someone to open your car door and grab your GPS, your credit cards or any other valuables you leave there.
Wherever you go, always lock your car. Residential security companies recommend you even lock it when it's in your driveway. Don't give the thief even a single moment to grab your stuff. Also, it’s a good idea not to leave anything valuable in your car, no matter where you park it. That's just asking for a smash and grab.
Around the House
Let's say you come back from vacation and walk into a stuffy house. It might be stifling, but don't be so quick to open all the windows.
It's easy enough for a thief to pop a screen and gain access to your house. Even inexperienced thieves can do it, and they can do it quickly. Residential security companies recommend that homeowners stay alert in the hot months because houses tend to have easier access. Never leave home with the windows open and be careful about leaving them open at night. For added security, homeowners with a fire alarm system in Minneapolis can contact Trans Alarm to add monitoring services and a burglar alarm system.
Be On The Lookout
Another simple way to stay safe this summer is to simply remain vigilant. We should do this all the time, but it’s particularly important in the summer. Pay attention to your surroundings no matter where you are. Put the cell phone away, so you are not distracted. When you're at the mall, notice who is around you. If you're at the amusement park with the children, look around to see who maybe shouldn’t be there.
If we simply paid more attention at all times, there would be a drop in crime rates. Criminals count on folks being distracted, and that's why being alert can stop them in their tracks.
For those times when you can’t be there, installing a burglar and fire alarm system in Minneapolis homes will help deter even more would-be criminals. For more information, visit transalarm.com.
