Software is a set of instructions given to the computer to solve a problem. It is also known as a program. Computer software specifies a sequence of operations to be performed by computer. A computer works according to the instructions written in software. It is a logical part of computer. It cannot be touched. The hardware cannot perform any task without it. It is stored on hard disk or diskette. It is loaded from the disk to ram as and when needed. Types of software The main types if software is system and application. System software System software is a set of programs to control and manage the actual operations of computer hardware. It controls the usage and allocation of different hardware components. It enables application programs to execute properly. It controls the basic operation as follows : Saving data on disk Making a computer to work for use Printing a document etc. Examples of system software Operating system Utility programs Device drivers Application software It is used to perform various applications on the computer. It helps a computer user to perform specific tasks. People use it according to their needs. It is also known as application package. Different application packages are used on computer to ease the work. The application software uses the operating system in order to function. The operating is the base software. It runs on top of the operating system software. Categories of application software The main categories of application software are as follows: Customized Package Customized software It is a type of software which is designed for co particular person or customer or organization.it is developed to meet the exact requirements of a particular customer or organization. It can be developed by a single programmer or series of programmers. The cost of preparing it is high from packaged software. For example a software developed for a particular university. Package software It is a type of application software that is developed for sale to the general public. It is also known as off the shelf software. It enables the people to perform daily activities. Package software is normally developed by expert programmers. Examples of application software are as follows Spread sheet Databases Graphics Communication Microsoft offices Micro soft office is a software containing a set under which letters , applications, reports, articles, resume, presentations, lectures, slides, sheets can be prepared with it .
