Top Tips for Travel to Rome

Travel & Tourism
For many visitors, Ciampino airport transfers are the start of their Roman adventure. If you’re thinking about succumbing to the charms of this great centre of European culture, some of the following top tips might come in handy.

1. Match the season to your biology That’s not quite as ‘new age’ as it may sound but relates to the much more pragmatic subject of temperature. Rome can be very hot in summer, so if you don’t like heat, think about visiting in spring or autumn.

2. Remember there is more than one Rome airport

Ciampino was the original airport for Rome and is very close, at around 12 kilometres, to the city centre. That’s good news if you’ve pre-booked Ciampino airport transfers – but less so if your flight actually arrives at Leonardo Da Vinci! In general, the former is served by charters, low-cost airlines and executive jet travel, while Leonardo Da Vinci tends to be used by the major scheduled carriers.

3. Be aware at major tourist sites

Just like London, Paris and virtually any other city centre tourist location anywhere in the world, Rome has its share of opportunistic criminals who specifically target tourists. These typically involve pickpockets, bag snatching and some other scams. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you when out and about and try not to wear lots of “look how wealthy I am" jewellery. Dressing-down a little (i.e. avoiding expensive brands and labels) might also be advisable.

Also, though not usually involving crime, remember that at some sites people dressed up in quaint and traditional costumes will be private enterprises not local employees. They’ll be happy to pose for photographs but remember they’ll expect to get paid. Make sure you check and agree their prices in advance to avoid disputes and extortionate charges.

4. Try to eat away from the main squares and boulevards

Italian cuisine is legendary and, no, it’s not all pasta and pizza! However, restaurants in prime locations might be excellent but they’ll also be aimed at business and tourist traffic with menus and prices to match. If you’re looking for a slightly more authentic experience, remember most Romans won’t eat in such establishments normally but instead frequent restaurants just outside of the centre and in small and apparently unfashionable back streets. So, try asking at your hotel, your driver on the Ciampino airport transfers, or just keep your eyes open for those smaller and less glamorous-looking dining establishments. You may see a very different side to Italian cuisine.

5. Think twice about car hire

Even locals will tell you that driving in Rome is at best described as ‘interesting’ and at worst, nightmarish. For the uninitiated, it can be a nerve-wracking experience. Instead, use taxis or local public transport systems – or walk where feasible. Remember if you’re taking a taxi and it’s not metered or you’re taking it outside of the controlled area, it’s always a good idea to agree the fare in advance. In terms of getting to your hotel from the airport, Ciampino airport transfers are typically very reasonably priced, particularly if reserved in advance.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct. If you’re looking for Ciampino airport transfers, Shuttle Direct provide pre-booked shuttles to major destinations all over Europe. Wherever you travel, Shuttle Direct can make sure that you don’t miss your car on your holiday abroad.
