Chronic Regional pain syndrome occurs in legs, arms and gradually moves inside the body. It is a kind of neuropathic pain that leads to nerve injury and bone injury. Commonly known as CRPS, the treatment for the syndrome includes physical therapy and drugs. Along with pain, swelling also appears. The whole body is affected slowly. The CRPS is of two kinds, one is type I and the other being type II. Type I was earlier known as sympathetic dystrophy and type II was known as causalgia. Type II leads to nerve damage, and is more painful. However the reasons behind type II pain remain a mystery. In type II, there are less chances of the pain shifting to other parts of the body while in type I the pain shifts to other parts of the body. Hence in type II the pain leads the patient to consult immediate medical attention. There are vast numbers of patients reported with this type. Being common in women, it is also common in young adults. It can lead to disability and impairment too. CRPS means dysregulation of the central nervous system. The chronic regional pain syndrome is the most painful conditions known to doctors. However, it is understood that CRPS has psychological and physical factors. Psychological factors include anxiety and depression while physical factors include surgery and injury. The treatment includes taking Vitamin C in the daily diets. CRPS is a systemic disease and results in complications like cardiac and respiratory. It can also lead a person to face urological and gastrointestinal malfunctions. The symptoms for CRPS include grinding pain, stabbing pain and electrical sensations. Local swelling, skin temperature changing, high sweat rate and change in color are other symptoms. The bones might also soften and joints may become stiff. Continuous pain of CRPS can be increased with time with physical and emotional stress. Another kind of neuropathy condition is cluster headache. This kind of headaches is also referred as suicide headaches. They occur several times in a single day. It is an unexpected pain occurring in head. Cluster headache is a short pain and is very painful. It occurs near the eyes and is a one sided pain. On the side at which the pain will occur, the eye will become red and watery. The nose will start running too. The cluster headache becomes serious when the temperature of the body rises. It also becomes a high density headache when alcohol is taken. The headache may last from days to months. The treatment for cluster headaches includes three methods, one is abortive, two is transitional and three is preventative. Abortive treatments reduce the pain in very little time. The cluster headaches are so short that the abortive treatment for cluster headaches should treat the patient in 10 to 15 minutes time. One such treatment is rapid inhalation of oxygen. The oxygen content to the patient may be increased depending on its relief. There are a couple of non-narcotic treatments available like sarapin injections and botox. Also lidocaine given in the nasal cavity gives results. However large amounts of the dosage should be avoided as it gives damage to the nasal cavity. Another is transitional treatment, which is a short term preventative treatment. These wait for the preventative treatment effects to work. Steroids like dexamethasone are one of the best solutions till date. It comes into effect within 24 hours The other treatment is known as preventive treatment. These treatments are used to give the bearer a long term treatment. Verapamil is the recommended preventative therapy. Other alternate treatments include lithium. Also supplements of magnesium with Vitamin D3 have shown results in the treatment. Be it Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome or Cluster Headaches, the effects of the pain are tremendous. Hence, it is recommended to consult a doctor as soon as nerve pain starts.
