It is sometimes useful to have some pieces of medical equipment available at home for monitoring certain conditions. These days it is possible to use small machines and keep track of things such as diabetes, blood pressure and heart rate. A finger oximeter, or a fingertip oximeter, is one such device which is used for measuring the blood oxygen saturation level. The Contec oximeter detects spo2 and pulse rate through the patient's skin and indicates the pulse intensity with a bar graph. The measurement of spo2 is taken from the arterial pulse, thus sufficient pulsating blood flow is required. For people with weak pulse due to shock, low ambient body temperature, major bleeding, or use of a vascular contracting drug, the spo2 waveform will decrease. Pulse oximetry is a useful method of monitoring patients in many circumstances, and in the face of limited resources, the pulse oximeter may represent a wise choice of monitor, as with training it allows for the assessment of several different patient parameters. Due to its simplicity in using and its speed, a colour oximeter is very important in emergency situations and it is also very useful with respiratory or cardiac problems and for diagnosis of sleeping disorders such as apnoea and hypopnea. A handheld oximeter is a portable battery-operated unit which is useful for pilots in operating a non-pressurized aircrafts above 10,000 feet where supplemental oxygen is required. These are also useful for mountain climbers and athletes whose oxygen levels may decrease at high altitude or with exercise. It also comes employs a software that charts a patient’s blood oxygen and pulse which serves as a reminder to check blood oxygen. The only time the parents are able to see if their child is getting enough oxygen is unfortunately when the child is experiencing an asthma attack. A children oximeter is a health and medical device that measures pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation within seconds. The device utilizes the latest technology whereby it is able to measure the percentage of oxygen in haemoglobin and thus give an output this percentage on the device for the parents to see. When the parents see this level they can then determine whether their child is getting enough oxygen to exercise or whether they may be in need of supplemental oxygen. This can make a huge difference to the health of the child. Where children are concerned, naturally they have a smaller anatomical feature such as a finger. Their fingers are smaller and as such the finger oximeter may not be able to fit their small fingers and provide a snug fit that will then translate into accurate pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation readings. If an adult oximeter is used on a child the most likely effect is that the readings will be sporadic and in fact incorrect because the adult portable oximeters are intended for the fingers of adults. This is why there are special children oximeter devices which are available so that a correct reading may be taken.
