Email copywriting is a very difficult task. It is has multiple, often conflicting roles. You need it to build a relationship with an 'opt-in.' You need it to encourage use of your lead generating 'bait.' You need it to maintain relationships with your existing customers. Finally, you need it to sell. There isn't much in life that is more liberating than sending an email out and seeing dollars fill up in your account. There is a sense of pride in your own hard work as well as reward for all the effort you've made to get yourself there. Although everybody out there is doing email marketing, not everybody is doing it 'right.' Here are my 3 steps to creating emails that get read, build relationships and allow you to sell more. Don't give them a reason to unsubscribe It is a pretty intimate place to be the ole email inbox. The recipient can click a link and block you from ever being there again. Then press criminal charges if you decide to ignore it. At all times, you need to be aware of this and not push your luck. Hard sell turns everyone off. Stay the hell out of it. Most reasonable people and therefore good customers respect your right to sell to them as long as they are getting value in return. The old adage about 80% content 20% sell is a good one to stick to. This can be done with 4 content emails and then one outright pitch or it can be done with 80% content within an email and then a short commercial. Both work. Know what the goal of the email is before you start to write You need to know what you are headed towards when you start to write your emails. If you want them to click on a link you need to be starting to seed this when you first start writing. If your goal is to strengthen your emotional bond then you need to know this too. And you need to be writing this goal. Most emails are short - and can only accomplish one goal easily in the given space. Be Aware of this and when you have complex messages, do it in multiple parts. Be Informal. Remember how I said you are in intimate space when you send an email? Well your audience wants you to form an intimate bond with them. So keep your emails as conversations between friends. Don't act like a salesman and don't pontificate at them. Respect that intimacy and when you finally do talk to your clients they will think they already know you and selling to them will be much easier. Email writing may be frowned upon as difficult and hard to get right but mastering the art though hard work it is infinitely rewarding. check plagiarism
