What You Need To Design A French Provincial Bedroom

Home Improvement
In interior décor, none comes close to the massive popularity French provincial design enjoys. It's antique, quaint, beautiful and rustic. Making use of plenty of wood and ornamentation, it can be upscale or modest.

If you love the look like millions of others, try it out on the bedroom. You can have beds with turned legs, white dressers and vanities, gauzy curtains and bursts of color with fresh flowers. There are countless ideas to put into practice. Check out what we've picked which can be applied to any bedroom, grand or modest.

The bed

Start with the bed. You can choose a distressed paint finish or not. If it has high headboards and footboards, paint it white to give it freshness. Bed skirts are a good idea especially if they're carved. Remember not to overdo it, however, as the style shouldn't be reminiscent of art décor or rich, medieval designs.

A fluffy duvet, a couple of soft, deep pillows and a bedcover patterned richly and regal colors of wine red, cold or pale blues will make a nice contrast. If you prefer a bed with a wooden finish, use plenty of white bedding.

Opt out of shiny metal in favor of wrought iron which is too modern as chairs, whether for use with a vanity or not, look best distressed. Don't confuse rust with distressed and if any furniture you pick up is corroded, remove the rust and repaint it. Add grains of 'old-looking' paint to create a used look.

Leather has no place in French provincial décor because fabric was cheaper and favored for upholstery. Turquoise is a great shade especially as an accent when teamed with pale pink, cream, beige, gold or silver. If upholstery shows sign of slight wear and tear, leave it as it is for a shabby chic result.

Dressers look best in distressed white paint. Some designers choose to go all-white which is a safe and the best solution for a hassle-free French provincial look. You can, however, break up the color with silver or black drawer handles. Finish it off with an ornately designed wall mirror, add a glass vase of flowers and personal effects.

If carpets are needed, go for sober tones like cream, white, beige or a warm brown. If the floor is left bare, opting for wooden flooring is preferred as concrete doesn't live up to aesthetics. Make sure it's polished/waxed or treated to a high sheen to balance the overall distressed look.

Wardrobes are more subtle in design so skip ornately carved ones in favor of those whose only decorative element is a carved top. Don't substitute functionality for looks as you'll find yourself out of storage space. You can add another mirror to the room by having one installed on the wardrobe.

Window treatments

French provincial style curtains are sober or rich in color and with or without patterns. Simple lace is often used for sheers. Skip shutters unless necessary and install window panes with large glasses. Valences and swags are common and instantly beautify a room.

Remember, French provincial is all about elegance, simplicity and rustic beauty. You can choose to go bourgeois, royal or simple country. What matters is slim, carved furniture, dominant sober colors, plenty of wood and no leather and metal.
