Sheet metal fabrication refers to the shaping and bending processes of sheet metals. You can give various types of shapes and sections to metals using fabrication processes, and transform a simple sheet into hand tools, or more sophisticated power-run automatic machinery. Generally, the sheet metal work begins with basic operations such as cutting, slitting or perforating with the help of tools that execute some kind of sheering action. The sheering operation can be either done with hand scissors like cutting tools, or a power-run bench sheers for heavy gauge materials. Another method of fabricating a metal is shaping. A vast range of shaping operations such as bending, or folding are carried on presses and similar machines. Similarly, other types of shaping operations include grooving, seaming stamping, beading and crimping. All these processes are designed to stiffen and reshape the metal. Sections and angles are formed through folding, or bending of metals. In order to give a suitable edge to the metal section, coiling is done. Coiling is accomplished by applying a coiling, or rolling tool on a press. The most important benefit of coiling is it increases the strength of the metal at the edge so that the formed shape does not break, or tear apart easily due to constant usage. A metal is given cylindrical and circular shapes such as tubes on a roll forming machine. In addition to the above processes, there are press forming operations such as embossing and cupping to give innovative and intricate shapes to sheet metals. As the name indicates, cupping means converting a black sheet in to a cup form. It is the first step in the forming operation where relevant tools are employed to give the metal its final shape. On the other hand, embossing refers to applying specific designs on the metal for strengthening purposes. Usually, embossing is done on partly finished components to get desired effects. Moreover, embossing gives a distinct and appealing look to the final finished item. When two sheets of a metal are to be joined together, the process of seaming comes into picture. Seeming means joining two or more metal parts. For example, metal roofing is prepared by joining two sheets of the metal in desired shape for intended use. In order to form a flange on metal components, the process of flanging is applied to get the desired effect. If the metal needs to be stiffened, or embellished, beading process is employed to make depressions. In addition to this, there are various other processes of metal sheet fabrication. The advancement in technology has enabled the modern world to perform various techniques on metals, and get unique and intended shapes which were not possible in the past.
