To the folks at Weston Wear, it was like getting salt rubbedin their wound. The day after a marauding band of Occupy protestors smashed the Valencia Street clothing store swindows , the owners got another jolt a city citation notice forhaving graffiti on the plywood they had put up over the vandalizedwindows. It was just a head scratcher to us, said Bridget Moore, thestore manager. It seemed there was no thought as to why we had abunch of plywood up. The store s four windows were smashed in the Monday night protest ostensibly held over income inequality and Weston Wear hadthem boarded up later that night.
The next morning, Moore said, shediscovered a small graffiti tag on the plywood. It seemed to be somebody s initials, Moore said. I was justlike, Ugh, one more thing to deal with. But in a city plagued by complaints that officials arenickel-and-diming residents to death with rising parking ticketfines, putting parking meters in some residential areas andplanning to extend meters to Sundays, things were just gettingstarted. Moore said that Tuesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after theprotest turned violent, she found a city notice of citation tapedon the plywood saying they had 30 days to remove the graffiti orface an escalating $500 fine.
I just looked at is as more salt to a wound, Moore said. Itwas really bad timing. She took to Twitter tocomplain – the topic zinged around the socialnetworking service – and on Thursday received a call froma Department of Public Works official apologizing about theincident, voiding the notice and offering to help. Oh SF City dept, citing us for graffiti on our boarded up windowsis just poor taste. Weston Wear Store (@WestonWearStore) May 3, 2012 Their apology was very heartfelt, she said in an interview.
DPW spokeswoman Gloria Chan called this "anisolated incident" and a complete misunderstandingon our end. We re looking into it and identifying where the breakdown was, Chan said. We re definitely mindful of what happened and wecompletely apologize. We want to help these businesses get back ontheir feet again.
