Living room furniture is essential in any new home. A house or apartment that is not suited for entertaining has little value, even if it is in a convenient or exciting location. A home has to feel welcoming, or else no one will want to spend any time there. Fortunately, there many are ways to save money on furniture so that a living room can be ready for guests as soon as possible. The one piece that should be purchased new is a couch. Soft furniture retains the smells and stains from its former owner, and there is no way to ensure that it's fully clean. People who live in cities with bedbug epidemics have to be especially careful about purchasing used furniture. It is also difficult to ascertain how worn out a used couch is. Since a couch is used on a daily basis, the safest bet is to start with a new piece that does not have any hidden damage or weak spots from prior use. A couch does not have to be big or expensive to be an appropriate focal point for a living room. A small, simple loveseat would suffice. Many mainstream furniture retailers sell inexpensive loveseats. They are intended to be used in dorms or first apartments, but a creative person could figure out a way to make it work in a large apartment or a normal-sized house. To furnish the rest of the room, one must be realistic about how often he or she hosts groups of friends. Many young adults make the mistake of thinking that they will always be entertaining large groups. They fill their living rooms with mismatched, unattractive furniture that is rarely used and poorly arranged. One more soft piece of furniture, like an armchair, would complete the primary configuration of the living room. One or two armchairs could be purchased new along with the loveseat in a matching set. Another option would be to have used armchairs recovered in a fabric that complements but does not exactly match the fabric on the couch. Recovering furniture can be pricey, but it is still generally less expensive than buying brand new high quality furniture. Refurbishing an old armchair is a clever way of injecting some vintage style into a contemporary room. Some spare hard chairs should be kept against a far wall for use when large groups are over. Not everyone will need to sit at once, and it is acceptable to assume that people will rotate between the soft and hard furniture all night. These chairs do not have to match in style, but they should be painted or stained in coordinating colors to give them a sense of unity. Choosing small pieces is the fun part. Vintage and handmade lamps, coffee tables and art pieces can be placed around the room according to one's tastes. Entertainment centers can sometimes be found for free in newspaper and Internet listings. They cost more to move than they are worth, so people who are relocating often give them away. With some careful prioritizing and creative problem solving, a living room can be furnished at minimal cost.
