The other day I was listening to the radio and the host was interviewing a woman who has written a New York Times bestseller about men. I am very familiar with this host and I know that the book must be very good or he would not have had this woman on the air. In fact, this is the 2nd time he has interviewed her. The difficulty I have in listening to this woman is that she sounds like a teenager; thus, I find it hard to take her seriously. A voice that is childlike or reminiscent of a teenager does not give me confidence in that person’s credibility. In researching this author, I can tell you that she is middle-aged. Sounding too young is also not something that affects just women. I have spoken to and heard many men who also sound too young. If your voice is excessively nasal, for example, it can give a most ‘youthful’ impression that does not lend credibility whether you are male or female. There is no doubt that the sound of your speaking voice is a large part of the image you project. Exactly what those statistics are is debatable. Some say it is as much as 38% with your appearance accounting for 55%. Of course, over the phone, in which appearance is a non-issue, the sound of your voice is most definitely the major impact of the image you are projecting. What is fascinating about the voice is that: - Everyone has a better voice inside of them once you change the way you place it.
- Every voice that is powered by means of the chest cavity sounds mature. Not too old; not too young; ageless.
- Every voice that has had this training improves with age.
I really love that last one because when I am 85 and look 85, I will not sound 85! The reason is because I have taken much of the pressure – much of the ‘wear’ and ‘tear’ – off my vocal cords and throat. In addition, when you learn to place your voice properly, you will be able to increase your volume without shouting and also have much more voice (and energy) by the end of the day. There is no reason for you to sound like a teenager, a pre-teen, or younger still. Learn to use your chest as your primary sounding board and you will discover a voice that sounds credible no matter what your age!
