Tips in Iron Surfaces Painting
There are different painting applications depending on the material used. As usual, the right type of paint should be practiced in metal painting as same as wood and concrete painting. Wrong type of paint and wrong application would make a metal to look undesirable. People wanted to have their iron wrought or their garage. In United Kingdom, Iron wrought are popular for homes with little space for their garage, but in the US there are homes that use iron railing for steps and also as fence. Due to the popularity of iron railing, services such as Iron surfaces painting Evanston IL are made available by the painters to help them prevent the iron from rust and refinish old paint into a new coat.

Metal rust through time and one of the best ways to protect metal is to paint it with the appropriate paint to avoid rust. But painting a metal is tricky as you can imagine, you must learn the proper technique of painting it to make it look more professional and also desirable. In this article we would provide you some tips in painting iron surfaces and how the results affect your home.

Tip # 1: Prepare the Area and Materials
One of the most important tips in everything that you do in painting is to prepare the area and materials that you would use. Not preparing the area properly may spill some paint across the floor. Proper surface preparations are:

• Inspect and identify the area o rust, damage, stains etc to be taken care off in the process of painting

• Cover the entire floor with newspaper to avoid paint splatter and spills on floors and walls
• Make sure the metal surface is dry
• Paint in a well-ventilated space
• Prepare a rug for wiping the paint drops in surfaces you don’t desire to paint
• Prepare a trash can to throw waste

Further Metal Preparation

It is strongly advised that the metal surface needs to be well prepared. The paint does not stay on the galvanized steel, aluminum and tin particularly if the surface is not well cleaned and prepared. During the preparation it is recommended to wear mask to avoid exposure to dust and from the odor of paint. You may need Sand paper, sanding block, and stiff brush for preparing metal. Here are some tips in preparing metal:

• Clean it and remove traces of oil and grease
• The rust must be completely removed because paint does not adhere well on rusted surfaces.
• Paste filler may correct dents and surface imperfection.
• Rough up the surface with coarse grade sandpaper or a brush. Wipe the surface with damp cloth to remove traces of dust. Sanding may help in paint adhesion.

Tip # 2 Priming
Many paint jobs fail because the surfaces are not properly prepared. Most metal surfaces need to be a little rough before any paint application. Primer would be a catalyst between the metal and the paint. Extra time for applying the right primer will save you money.

Tips # 3 Painting Different Iron Surfaces
There are different techniques in painting different kinds of texture of iron. The technique may vary depending on the metal composition because some of these do not adhere well compared with each other.

Rusty Metal – considered as one of the most difficult to paint on the different iron substances because it is covered with oxidized tiny protrusions. It is important to save the surface first from rust; one of the methods is by using acid pickling route. This composition may contain acid picking salts that are phosphoric or hydrochloric-acid based. Make sure to clear the rust from the metal using wire brush to scrape the rust. After the rust is removed; apply a paint that is oil-based metal primer.

Aluminum – In order to lose the coat of aluminum for you to paint it, a turpentine and abrasive pad are needed to remove the protective coating in aluminum. After applying the said chemical, rinse the surface with clean water. Wipe the aluminum dry then paint immediately with water-based acrylic paint. . When you desire to cover the aluminum with enamel paint, apply a coat of water-based galvanized iron primer.

Galvanized Iron – These materials are commonly used in gutters and in roofs. The zinc coating in the iron sheet makes it galvanized. Zinc is used to delay rust on the surface. Apply the right primer when coating galvanized iron. It is important to follow this rule to avoid further problems. Look for a water-based acrylic galvanized primer when you purchase the outer coating of paint.

Copper – this is a metal type that is easy to work with. Simply sand the surface before paint it. Use red oxide primer to ready the surface for painting.

Painting an iron surface may be tricky due to different metal properties, but remember that before doing anything follow the first two tip which are preparing the surface and priming. This would allow you to focus more on your painting and would constantly make your painting easier to manage.
