Originally discovered by the Spanish and Portuguese, and briefly claimed by them during the 16th and 17th centuries, Barbados is today its own country. It thrives on tourism and a well-established culture of business and opportunity. But people mainly visit the small island for its natural beauty and beaches. From the luxury hotels at its tip, like Cobblers Cove, to the far end of the island, there is no shortage of beaches to explore and water activities to dive into. But if you're the type who prefers to get your feet moving on your holiday, there is also no lack of walking and hiking trails for you to enjoy when you are not soaking up the chilled Caribbean atmosphere on the beach.
Walking in the woods
Though the majority of the island away from the luxury hotel at Cobblers Cove is developed, and therefore has less woodland than a visitor might expect, there are still a couple of great places to explore. Visit Turner's Hall Woods, which is a 50-acre farm where you can walk through the remnants of a tropical forest. The area is perfect for anyone who loves a good stroll, and for those who want a bit more of a challenge there are a few steeper trails –including a very steep half-mile trail. Give it a go if you're feeling energetic! One thing you may notice is that, though the forest is tropical, it is not a traditional rainforest in that there is a distinct lack of rain. You'll enjoy the abundance of unusual flora and fauna here, and also keep your eyes peeled for the monkeys that call the area home.
Walking on the Atlantic coast
When you leave your beautiful accommodation at Cobblers Cove, take a drive down to the area of Bathsheba on the central-eastern coast of the island. With the wild Atlantic Ocean hammering into the shore and the extent of beaches it is quite spectacular. The massive boulders create an unusual presence on the beaches and the coastal walks around this area are simply breath taking.
The route along the coast will take you through a variety of small, traditional fishing villages, where you can stop for a traditional snack or a fruity tipple by the water. You can walk from the lighthouse at Ragged Point to Bathsheba in one go, or break up this 16-mile stretch into shorter walks between the villages.
After an energetic day on one of the island's wonderful walks, you can return to your accommodation at Cobblers Cove for cocktails and dinner. True Caribbean bliss!
