Alcohol and drug addiction is regarded as any other disease that can be treatable some six decades ago. At present, the system of treating substance abuse which is now largely public funded and is being run by counselors with limited medical training is quite small and is already overflowing in many places. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, only about ten percent of twenty three million Americans with alcohol or drug problems are now receiving treatment and reasons for this include shame, stigma, and the other reason being lack of insurance coverage that amounts to a quarter. The overall uninsured rate comes around 16%. With money on treatment limited, slots in rehabilitation centers and hospitals are scare. In recent years, many alcohol and drug rehab centers have been shrinking rather than growing due to government budget cuts for patients who receive public support.
