One of the most beautiful and sought after form of flooring is hardwood floors. While hardwood floors are aesthetically pleasing, they do create some problems. Depending on the type of wood chosen, hardwood can be very slippery, especially on the stairs. If you have hardwood stairs, there are a few things you can do to help them be less slippery including surfboard wax, clear tread, stair runners, and stair nosing. Surfboard Wax Surfboard wax was created to help the smooth surface of a surfboard be less slippery when wet. Similarly, waxing your stairs could help your hardwood be less slippery. Although this is the least noticeable option, downside to using wax is that you will need to continue waxing regularly to keep up the non - slip surface. Clear Tread A second option is to create your own clear tread on the edge of each stair. You can create the tread by mixing fine clear sand with polyurethane. Then, use a brush to paint the mixture onto the stair. This is another way to create a clear anti-slip covering for your stairs. Stair Runner Another option is to cover the part of the stairs that you walk down. You can either purchase a stair runner or carpet tiles to accomplish this. Although having a rug or carpet over your stairs will cover up the hardwood, it is the safest option. It is an especially good idea if you have pets, children, or elderly people living in or visiting your home often. Stair Treads or Nosing Stair treads or nosing are another great way to make your stairs slip resistant. Stair nosing or treads are generally installed on the edge of the stair which prevents users from slipping or sliding off of the edge. Stair treads are the best option for outside use as they are resistant to weather, but they can be used indoors as well. Amstep Products has successfully delivered safety stair tread and nosings to a variety of customers in a number of different applications. (http://www.amstep.com/)
