Barack Obama Arrives in Denver to Claim Democratic Presidential Nomination

Barack Obama speaks at a rally about securing America's future with veterans and military families at Riverfront park in Billings, Montana, Wednesday, 27 Aug. 2008Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama arrived in Denver, Colorado, on Wednesday as his name was placed in nomination for president at the Democratic National Convention.Obama and his choice for vice presidential running mate, Delaware Senator Joseph Biden, both will be formally nominated by the party later Wednesday evening.A role call vote to determine the party's candidate follows brief nominating speeches for Obama and his former chief rival, New York Senator Hillary Clinton. In a symbolic gesture, some state delegations are expected to cast ballots for Senator Clinton.Sen. Hillary Clinton addresses Democratic National Convention, 26 Aug. 2008She is expected to appear at the role call, where she or a surrogate will call for acclamation for Obama.At a meeting ahead of the nomination vote, Clinton released her convention delegates to vote for Obama. Many in the audience yelled "No!" in response.The New York senator said she had already cast her vote for Barack Obama, but said she would not tell her delegates what to do and encouraged them to follow their hearts. Biden is set to deliver his acceptance speech later Wednesday. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton will speak before Biden, a day after his wife issued a ringing endorsement for Obama. In a speech Tuesday, Senator Hillary Clinton described herself as "a proud supporter of Barack Obama" and urged her party to unite behind his candidacy. Republicans hold their national convention next week in the city of St. Paul, Minnesota, where Senator John McCain is expected to be nominated.
