WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A ROOFER? Have the guts or end up getting nuts. A silly joke but is meant seriously by roofers in Corpus Christi. Roofing is one of the most risky jobs you may get into. A roofer may get his one foot on the grave whenever he climbs up the ladder for roof installation. Imagine how roofers manage the whole roofing installation on high rising buildings. Roofing job requires a lot of guts and experience just to get it right without putting yourself on danger. What are roofers? Roofers repair and install roofs either on residential or commercial buildings. They coordinate with the clients or contractors on the type of roof construction needed including the type of materials they prefer and submits a project timeline until it gets done. They observe industry guidelines and government regulation to make sure that they work with maximum safety. A roofer can learn the roofing job in two methods. Some construction workers end up as roofers after years of exposure and experience to construction without the need of getting a diploma from legal apprentices. The second one is a three-year apprenticeship program offered by unions and contractor associations.
Roof Cautions and Precautionary Measures
A roofing job is no joke. Miscalculations and careless actions can both lead to fatality. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), based on their most recent survey, it shows that the death rate of roof workers was 32.4 deaths per 100,000 workers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA even stated that roofing and carpentry are “two major classes of hazardous work." One of the most common causes of injuries is falling from heights and 22% of the roof falls is led by fragile roofs. Fragile roofs can be affected by the following factors:
• quality of material used ( durability and thickness)
• the support system
• longevity
Other than fragile roof materials, falls can also take place from the edges of the roof, through gaps or holes in roof and sometimes due to lack of roof lighting. To be able to avoid roof –related injuries:
• Avoid working at heights without the proper equipment and protective support
When you cannot avoid reaching maximum heights be sure you have the complete protective material and equipment. You can use a mobile elevating work platform or MEWP or any binoculars where you can view your roofing position with accuracy
• Risk assessment- All roof related works are dangerous but the danger probability depends on the size of the roofing project. You are likely expose to danger when you are into larger roofing projects. You should assess and identify the probable risk before the project begins so you can prepare the necessary equipment and protective gears in advance
• Safe entrance and exit- Entrance and exit are important on roof works. This tells how safe you were able to climb the roof and how safe you landed or set your feet back on the ground after working. Safe entrance and exit also depends on the tower scaffolding or a simple ladder you are using so be sure you checked it for any damage before you use it.
• Edge Protection and Work Platforms – These are equally important to prevent a fall from occurring. A secured working platform and edge are suggested to secure the work area.
• Safe landing system
Once fall is about to happen, you can minimize the injury that will incur with soft landing nets or inflatable bean bags. This kind of landing system is the safest form of landing support you can have on the working site. Proper location and strength of your landing materials should also be ensured. Is there a future waiting for roofers?
According to Bureau of Labor Statistics or BLS, based on May 2011 report, roofers earned an average of $18 per hour. The highest paid roof works are those from government projects and structural and building exterior contractors. Roofers can look forward to a higher employment rate at an estimate of 18% higher in 2020 as compared to 2010. Roof repairs will likely increase this figure and areas which are usually strike by strong storms can provide greater opportunities for roof repair and replacement.
