Now that you have already decided to sign up for Sydney aikido classes, it is time for you to think about what you need to do before attending your first class. After all, you want to be prepared as you want to make the most of every sessions so it is only logical that you prepare well for it. Before your first training session, you should make it a point to drop by the dojo so you can see what they do during their classes so you have some idea of what will happen in yours. It will also be to your benefit to hand around and ask questions that you didn’t get to ask, or forgot to ask, the first time around. What questions do you need to ask? What to wear?- perhaps you didn’t get the chance to ask this the first time you paid them a visit but this is very important because you want to wear clothes that are comfortable yet allow you some protection at the same time. Most first-timers opt to wear comfortable clothes that consist of shirts and jogging pants as these provide them with room to move but they provide you adequate protection at the same time. Try to leave the fancy workout clothes at home because they will just get ruined as aikido is very hard on normal clothing; with all the twisting and pulling you do, this is just to be expected. Gi- your shirts and pants combo will do you well for several weeks but eventually, you aikido master will ask you to invest in a gi. Now, do not be shocked but gi are very pricy but the good part is you will only ever need one or two. They are very sturdy and hold up to the rigors of training quite well. You will really do yourself a favour if you invest in a good gi that fits all your needs. If you do not know where to look for a gi, you can check online or ask your master if they have any for sale. Some Sydney aikido dojos are quite lenient with the gi or their members but there are those with very specific requirements and they provide their own gi for their members and these act as uniforms. Hygiene- aikido is a very high-contact sport and you need to get really close to the people who are practicing with. This is why you will want to make sure you are neat and well-groomed as they will do you the same favour. You want to make sure you do not smell bad and that everything smells good or else the person you practice with will the thoroughly disgusted. Make sure you brush your teeth, trim your beard, and cut your nails as you do not want to scratch anyone as you practice. When you are neat and well-groomed, you not only show other people in your dojo respect but you show them that you respect yourself as well. Here at Shin Sen Dojo, we have years and years of experience with aikido. Visit our site for more information.
