Alcohol and drug addiction is one of the most common form of societal health problem that has spread its tentacles widely across the length and breadth of the nation. Alcohol and drug addiction does not discriminate amongst its victims. In fact, addiction to drugs affects people of all ages, genders, socioeconomic levels and classes. Across the United States, people from all demographics are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. As per the data of SAMHASA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) more than 24 million residents within the age group of 12 years and older are currently struggling with drug addiction in United States. Surprisingly, only about 10 percent of these people are getting treatment or professional help in various alcohol and drug rehab centers located across various locations of U.S. |
When studying the effects of alcohol and drugs based on gender, research conducted at the University of Washington concluded that more recently born women have developed more alcohol dependence in a shorter period when compared with their elders reflecting a strong secular trend from one age group to the other. It is estimated that about 40 per cent of the total addicted people in United States are women. The cause of growth in alcohol and drug abuse or dependence among women at present when compared with previous 50 to 60 years may be due to the following factors:
1. Wider social acceptance to consumption of alcohol and drugs for women,
2. More women entering the workforce and going to educational institutions, offices etc,
3. Women having more purchasing power and economic freedom,
4. Women being less hampered by gender stereotypes. According to National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA), the risk for women due to alcohol use or abuse is more than men are, as women achieve higher concentrations of alcohol in the blood and becomes more impaired than men become after drinking equivalent amounts of alcohol. They are more susceptible than men are to alcohol related organ damage and trauma resulting from accidents and interpersonal violence.
In addition, women who abuse substances or drugs have physiological consequences, health issues and medical needs related to gynecology. Specifically, it is observed that drugs and alcohol affect women’s menstrual cycles causing increased cramping and heavier or lighter periods. Some alcohol and drug rehab centers in United States are specifically helping women from coming out of alcohol and drug addiction by conducting women oriented alcohol and drug treatment/rehab programs.
