Taekwondo is one of the most popular martial arts in the world, in both the number of practitioners and the number of countries in which it is practiced. The sport of WTF Taekwondo has enjoyed enormous growth, culminating with it being added as a demonstration Olympic sport at the 1988 Olympics and a full medal awarding Olympic sport since 2000. Martial arts training brings the student confidence and self-esteem. It is important however to choose the right martial art style for you. Some styles are more focused on certain fighting ranges or on the use of particular body parts. The different martial arts, and indeed different schools teaching the same martial art, will have differing emphasis on formalities like etiquette, uniform style and ceremony. Choosing a martial arts class that best reflects what you want to get out of your martial arts training is very important. To the untrained person many martial arts styles can appear to be similar or even identical. Following are some of the main differences between Taekwondo training and other martial arts systems Taekwondo vs. Karate Both Taekwondo and Karate lessons are very popular throughout the world. Where Karate was developed as a Japanese martial art from influences of Kung Fu from China, Taekwondo is a Korean martial art based on traditional Korean martial arts and inspired by Karate. Both these martial arts are moderately formal in their emphasis on ceremony and etiquette. Both are stand up styles of fighting, leaving practitioners vulnerable if their attacker manages to grapple or pin them. Both styles tend to have crisp motions with emphasis on well-defined stop and go motions. One of the ways Taekwondo and Karate classes differ is their emphasis on kicking. Taekwondo is very focused on kicking, with roughly 60% of Taekwondo strikes being with the leg. This is because the leg is longer and far more powerful than the arms, giving Taekwondo martial artists the ability to inflict more damage from a longer range than a Karate practitioner. Karate lessons are more focused on hand strikes, with roughly 60% of Karate moves focusing there. Taekwondo’s focus on leg strength also gives the student the ability to cover distance rapidly and deliver flying and jumping kicks while moving, especially to the head of their opponent. Taekwondo vs Muay Thai A sport of growing popularity throughout the world is Muay Thai. Originally from Thailand, Muay Thai training was, like Taekwondo, originally designed for combat. Both Taekwondo and Muay Thai classes place emphasis on stand up striking, and both are considered a hard form of martial arts due to their sharp and linear striking motions. Muay Thai lessons differ from Taekwondo in that Muay Thai also teaches strikes with the knee and elbow. This gives the student eight point with which to strike using Muay Thai training, which has why Muay Thai can also be called the “Art of Eight Limbs”. While Muay Thai lessons are now considered the de-facto standard training for a Mixed Martial Artist it is also considered quite dangerous. When properly executed many Muay Thai moves can be immediately lethal.
