PETALING JAYA, Malaysia - The decision to allow more local studentsto study in international schools will not affect enrolment innational and national-type schools, Deputy Prime Minister Tan SriMuhyiddin Yassin said. This was because the enrolment capacity of the internationalschools was small compared to mainstream schools, he added. "The Government made a decision to remove the 40% quota forlocals in international schools after conducting a study. We wantto develop Malaysia into an education hub for not only the regionbut also the world," he said at the Malaysian BumiputraManufacturing and Services Industry luncheon here yesterday. Muhyiddin, who is Education Minister, said the internationalschools were set up to provide children of expatriates aninternational education system. "We have looked into the request by the international schoolsto res-cind the 40% quota condition and we found that it would notaffect them. "The international schools' capacity is small and Malaysianswho send their children to Singapore for education can now enrolthem here and there is no outflow of funds," he said, addingthat not all Malaysians can afford to pay the high fees of theinternational schools here. Earlier in Kuala Lumpur, Muhyiddin urged the people to stand upagainst any attempt by irresponsible groups to undermine thecountry's harmony and prosperity. He said the unity shown by the Barisan Nasional component partiesshould not be taken lightly. Launching the classic Chinese literature The Three Kingdoms inBahasa Melayu, Muhyiddin said people could learn from historicaltales on the decline and fall of civilisations due to powerstruggles. "In The Three Kingdoms or Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals), theyserve as a lesson so that we would not fall into undemocratic powerstruggles that deployed dirty tactics and unethical actions. "We must continue to ensure that the well-being and prosperitythat we have achieved are not damaged by extremism," he added. The historical tales revolve around three main characters - LiuBei, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu - during times of war which took placeabout 1,792 years ago during the end of the Han Dynasty.
