Asthama or Shwas Roga – is a respiratory disorder where the patient suffers from shortness of breath and gasps as a result of it. Chronic Patients may need nebulisation and hospitalization when the attack occurs. Indian Ayurveda and simple home grown therapies have provided a perfect antidote to this dreaded ailment. Using a holistic approach which includes diet management, yoga and Ayurvedic / Organic Therapies can go a long way in treating and ultimately eradicating the ailment as the child progresses in age. Asthmatic patients in chronic situations may experience wheezing due to shortness of breath and may be unable to lie down supine on their bed as a result of which they would have to be propped on a chair with their back erect or else supported upright on their bed. Any aggravation of this condition can prove fatal if left untreated – for example an allergy due to pollen infestation or diet, cold, influenza, pneumonia or any other condition that may affect the respiratory tract should be addressed immediately to avoid fatalities. While there are many solutions available on the net and many more that may be prescribed by medical practitioners or home grown medical "know me all" - the one solution that works wonder and I can say that from personal experience is the use of mustard oil. As a child I was afflicted with this disease and faced life threatening or at least life altering situations right through my infancy up to the age of 5 years – My mother was against all kinds of allopathic solutions and insisted on using the organic route for providing the solution to my ailment. This route was circuitous and difficult but one needed patience and conviction to overcome the problem. One can imagine the ordeal the child and the parents had to go through in an age where medical advancements were not very conspicuous at least not in India. With Asthma comes multiple problems magnified more in very small children who are unable to express clearly. Diet and loss of weight and remaining undernourished is a serious fall out of this ailment. I too was very weak and thin right through my early years. Due to my condition I never had the appetite for food and what ever little I did eat was due to fear of malnourishment affecting my body. Diet and in adequate growth apart from my condition severely bothered the doctors and my parents however this home grown therapy was suggested by my paternal grandmother. Basically the mustard oil (pure / organic variety) was heated and applied on 3 areas of my body. One was the centre of my scalp – in fact this area was doused with the oil in a way that my pillow had a yellow covering the next morning. The second was the soles of my feet where the hot mustard oil was massaged and the third was the chest area where the hot oil was massaged in copious quantities. Thereafter, a betel leaf which originates from Kolkata and is colloquially called Bangla Patta or leaves from Bengal was coated with a eucalyptus cream which was called Vicks. But I guess it can be any mentholated cream that one finds in Pharmacies would suffice. This betel leaf was then placed on my chest area and tied with a cloth right around my rib cage and left over night. Gradually the asthmatic condition began to subside and finally by the time I reached 1st grade, I was a normal child.
